Liberal Institutions and International Order
– renewing the infrastructure of freedom and liberalism

The meeting is structured around the following set of interdependent subthemes, central to our efforts to reinvent liberalism for the 21st century:

  • Challenges and Prospects for the Liberal World Order
  • The New Globalization and The Future of the WTO
  • Restating the Case for Liberal Democracy
  • New Perspectives on Institutions and The Nordic Model(s)
  • Federalism and the Future of the European Union
  • The Monetary and Financial Framework
  • Freeing The Captured Economy and Reforming the Framework of the Market Economy
  • Liberty in the Narrow Corridor of Checks and Balances
  • Reinventing Liberalism for the 21st Century

As part of the program we will also revisit three milestones in the history of ideas, closely connected to the Mont Pelerin Society:

  • The great socialist calculation debate, 100 years after Ludwig von Mises’ pioneering contribution was first published in 1920.
  • The 60th anniversary of Friedrich Hayek’s Constitution of Liberty, published in 1960.
  • The precursor to the Mont Pelerin Society: Colloque Walter Lippmann in Paris, 1938.

The meeting will also reach out to young scholars and talents, by means of:

  • Special pre-program Young Scholar Sessions, inviting young scholars to address the central theme of the meeting.
  • The Hayek Essay Contest, also thematically aligned with the main theme of the meeting.
